Peter Guttridge. Charity Ends at Home. A Nest of Occasionals. Wendi wanted to take the kids and move to South Florida to be close to her parents, and the two fought bitterly in court, filing motion after motion. Their frenzied legal battles drew in friends and family on both sides and ended suddenly and mysteriously one day when Dan Markel was shot and killed in his house. It's a wild tale with a mystery that continues to this day and captured national attention. During a Q and A after the first episode was played at a listening party in New York, Matt Shaer talked about some of the challenges of making the podcast and why they set it up differently than a regular true crime show.
We originally wrote the first episode revealing at the beginning that Dan was dead. We decided it would be more interesting in the beginning to be about a relationship and not immediately be about a dead body. Matt Shaer is a journalist that writes regularly for the New York Times Magazine, and originally he had been assigned to write the story as a magazine piece because he was working on an adjacent case. But he said it seemed bigger than a magazine story and realized it would lend itself better to radio or a podcast.
One of the reasons he felt that way was because of the great audio they were getting. The extensive use of sound is what makes these Wondery podcasts so special. At the listening party, Wondery CEO Hernan Lopez had the audience put on masks to cover their eyes and explained why sound draws the listener in so effectively. We tend to recognize sound before we recognize visuals and I don't know if this happened to you when you were listening with your eyes closed, but its a lot easier to imagine yourself in the middle of the moment when you're just experiencing it with sound.
